OWL MASK, YUP’IK WESTERN ALASKA The face on the back of the owl is the “inua” or spirit of the owl. The owl was often associated with the shaman because of its extraordinary vision, especially in the night allowing him to see in the dark. The owl is the bird of magic and darkness, of prophecy and wisdom and is believed to have great healing powers.
