AFRICAN DRUM, COTE d'IVORIE

Among the Baule, drums are used in a variety of ritual, military and secular performances. They inform the community of various events, such as arrival of a visitor, death of an individual of high status or the beginning of an important festival. Human and animal forms encircling this drum represent fauna from the central region. Included are lizard, chameleon, dog, coiled snake, crescent moon, crocodile, snake and male figure.
